Ginger is often immediately thought of to combat chills and colds. It’s also helpful for nausea and indigestion, and is believed to have blood-thinning properties and the ability to lower blood cholesterol levels.
It is used for respiratory problems such as colds, sore throats, bronchitis, congestion, headaches, and pain. It is additionally used for numerous ailments, including kidney problems, heart problems, fever, vomiting, cramps, menstrual symptoms, inflammation, arthritis, liver problems, gastrointestinal problems, and motion sickness.
Researchers claim that there are two natural antibiotics found in ginger, which inhibits growth of bacteria. It also has the ability to relieve dizziness and motion sickness, and may even help prevent a heart attack due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
Ginger is probably best known for its positive effect on the gastrointestinal system. In one study, powdered ginger was found to be more effective in treating motion sickness than some common over-the-counter treatments, without causing drowsiness. It’s my “go to” for anything digestive related.
Morning sickness often associated with the early months of pregnancy may be eased with ginger root.
Primary nutrients include calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, protein, sodium, vitamins A, B-complex, and C.
I personally drink ginger/lemon tea when I feel like I’m contracting a virus, and also add a dandelion root tea bag into each cup. Ginger is included in many herbal anti-viral combinations, available through my website. Ginger is sold as a single herb as well, if you prefer. It temporarily heats you up, so don’t be alarmed. I also love using ginger homeopathically (called Zingiber) and it’s available in essential oil form but I prefer using Young Living Digize, which includes ginger EO along with other essential oils that benefit the digestive tract.
Many natural health advocates enjoy a ginger bath if they feel they are coming down with a cold or have been exposed to what’s going around. It’s also gently detoxifying.
Ginger Detox Bath Soak
1/3 cup epsom salt
1/3 cup sea salt
1/3 cup baking soda
3 tbsp ground ginger
1 cup apple cider vinegar
Mix together dry ingredients and pour into a comfortably hot running bath with the 1 cup of apple cider vinegar.
Try to soak for at least 45 minutes (or for as long as you can keep the kids at bay) before rinsing off completely. Rehydrate with water before, during, and after since you will be sweating tons! This soak will make you quite tired so if possible, go to sleep immediately after. The extra sleep will help your body fight off the cold and hopefully you’ll wake up feeling much better!
TESTIMONY. A number of years ago a friend of mine was attending a funeral visitation and she had an awful stomach issue come on and felt miserable. Uncertain if it was something she ate, but I was assuming so because it came on after their family had went somewhere to eat during the visitation break. Since I didn’t have my natural pharmacy with me at our main Hudson Funeral Home location I went upstairs into the kitchen and grabbed some ginger spice. I filled a coffee cup half full with hot water from the water dispenser, added about three good shakes of ginger spice and stirred it well. After it had cooled I had her drink it. She said it was a miracle cure. Her stomach issues left quickly. She did say she heated up for a few minutes, but it dissipated quickly. Every time I saw her thereafter she would proclaim “I tell everyone I know about your ginger spice cure.”
Wow! So much good information about ginger! I’ll definitely be incorporating it more into my everyday be life!
